Meet Gina and Jeremy! Here are highlights from Gina and Jeremy’s photo shoot in Davis.
Before we get to the images I want to say something about shooting in a familiar location. I shoot a lot in Davis. If you’re not familiar with the area, it’s a small university town in California. It’s small enough that if you shoot here a lot you visit the same places often. That’s true and I love shooting in Davis and I always get different images on every shoot. How? Because I approach every image I take with every couple with an eye to their own unique personalities, and what’s going on right then between that couple in that location and in that light. This first image illustrates that – it was taken in a place I’ve shot tons of times before, and it’s just as unique as if I’d never seen the location.
This first photo struck me as a found moment that could have been witnessed last week or fifty years ago as a couple exchanged a glance. It could have been taken in the US, in Italy, in Germany, France, England, Hong Kong, India, Taiwan – it could have been taken anywhere at any time – it’s a story about a couple exchanging a moment, and couples exchange moments all over the world and they have been doing so throughout time. I finished the image as black and white because I just kept thinking this is a modern couple but if they had been transported back in time their exchange would be just as genuine and just as much in the moment. I wanted to give a hint of that in the image.
I normally don’t start off a story with a black and white image, but here it just seemed like a great introduction to them. Gina and Jeremy in the UC Davis Death Star.

The light was gorgeous and for most of the rest of these images it made sense to showcase Gina and Jeremy in the natural colors of that gorgeous light.

I hope you enjoy more of Gina and Jeremy’s story as caught in these images!

Meet Matthew and Tianna!

Tianna.

Matthew.

This next shot was taken at one of Tianna and Matthew’s favorite restaurants. It was closed and all the outdoor tables were locked up, but we really liked the colors of the facade and wanted to get a shot that showed off the entryway.

These next few images were taken at the UC Davis Death Star building.

Tianna.

I’ve shot at this outdoor hallway before, but never with just this concept. Somehow, Tianna and Matthew just seemed perfect to take a stroll along this wallkway in the Death Star building.

Now we are back above ground. Tianna and Matthew.

After the Death Star, we hit the Arboretum.

We finished off at the Arboretum just in time. Right after this shot it started to rain! That’s okay, we got lots of great images and had a tons of fun!!

Meet Amery and David!

When I met up with Amery and David to start their session they said they wanted to make sure and hit two places – the Death Star (aka the UC Davis Social Sciences and Humanities Building) and the UC Davis Arboretum. Great places to shoot!
Here’s Amery inside the Death Star.

Here’s David at the Arboretum.

It was overcast, almost foggy. Some people don’t like to shoot on cloudy days, I love to shoot anytime!!
David and Amery.

There’s this cool red brick wall downtown Davis, unfortunately it faces South and it’s usually baking in the hot Davis sun. But on an overcast day it’s a great place to shoot!

The Christmas decorations are up downtown.

I love this store in the next shot where they change out a giant poster advertisement according to the season. Currently, they have a guy using his hands as a megaphone. We thought it would be fun to mimic the look.

I really loved the light on the Arboretum as Amery and David took a stroll.

Amery had these great ballet flats on!

Meet Yee and Marvyn!

So, it’s getting cold in Davis. Cold and windy! I love this shot because Yee and Marvyn are naturally happy and this photo picks that up. And because it was just cold and windy today and you can sure see the wind in their hair! This image reflects how much fun it was to shoot with Yee and Marvyn today in cold, windy Davis!

Walking around town we found this building that is getting renovated. We loved the exterior color!

There were lots of ducks on Putah Creek today!

The light under the bridge was beautiful. Yee and Marvyn are totally fun and we had tons of laughs! But I asked them to look serious for a few shots because I just knew they would look absolutely great!

We all loved the light coming from between the trees.

Another found location we noticed while walking around. When we saw this yard full of abandoned bicycles we had to get some shots – this being Davis and all!

I’ve had my mind on album covers lately – taking images that conjure up thoughts of album covers. The next two photos are part of my album cover concept series.

Jenny and Josh arrived at the Davis Farmers Market yesterday for their session with big smiles and a box of chocolates. Great way to start a shoot!!
Meet Josh and Jenny!

These next two images were taken at the UC Davis Arboretum where it extends into downtown Davis. That stretch of Putah Creek was full of mallard ducks yesterday – and someone was feeding them so ducks all over the creek were making a beeline for the food. When I saw that we stopped where we were to get some shots with the water and ducks. You’ll see a couple of the ducks swimming past in the next shot – they were really moving!

I thought Jenny and Josh would look great in front of this green wall. And they do!

Now we are back at the Arboretum.

We were walking around, talking, having fun and all the while looking for interesting places that would compliment Jenny and Josh, when we ran across this sculpture with an arch. We had to get some images in front of it.

We found this next location again by exploring. We had been commenting on the interesting mix of architecture on the Davis campus, when the blue tile set against the otherwise earthy facade of this building caught my eye. I thought the blue would go well with Jenny’s outfit and Josh’s blue eyes, and the earth tones would be flattering and make a nice contrast. I figured we’d do one shot there but we kept coming up with cool concepts to try!

I actually fell in love with Josh’s coat and seeing Josh in it reminded me of a Burberry ad. Here’s our interpretation.

When I saw this chain-link fence guarding these windows I immediately thought let’s try an album cover concept.

It was getting dark and we wrapped up at this next location. This tile wall just looks like a fun place to do some fun shots!

Jenny and Josh – thanks for the great shoot!
